Spring has Sprung
Finally. As I was shoveling snow after our last April thunder
snowstorm, cursing Paul Douglas, Belinda Jensen & friends I heard
something that I never heard before. The sounds of birds chirping as
white flakes violently fell to the ground. It was at that specific
moment when the paradox that is Spring in Minnesota became forever
frozen in mind. April showers I’m all for, but not snow
showers.
As we continue to thaw out , spring clean and dig out the summer
clothes, the Chamber begins to gear up for what is Volunteer Season. In
the coming months we have many exciting and fun events planned such as
Season 2 of The Amazing Pace, Dan Patch Days, and of course, what would
summer be without the annual Golf Classic? But we can’t do it alone.
There truly is no better way to show your support for the Chamber (well,
other than renewing your membership) than by volunteering to help plan,
coordinate or execute a Chamber event. In fact, it’s been proven to be
good for your health. Did you know:
□
Volunteer work enhances social support networks and that people
with strong social support networks have lower heart disease and fewer
health risk factors?
□
Volunteering actually can reduce your heart rate and blood
pressure, increase endorphin production, and enhance your immune system?
It’s medicinal!
□
Volunteering puts people in highly social situations, increasing
the opportunity for close personal relationships and strengthening a
sense of identity?
Dan Patch Days alone requires hundreds of volunteers who graciously
donate thousands of hours every year so we can all enjoy ourselves in
the park as we celebrate the legend of Dan Patch. Our very own Lori
Anderson and Kristi Erickson somehow, manage to put in about 100 hours
alone during the week leading up to this great community event.
So, as you
wrap up your Spring shoveling and begin to enjoy the weather outside,
please consider volunteering your time to the upcoming events, even if
you can afford only just a few hours. Who knows, you’ll actually have
some fun, meet some new friends and it’s not only good for the Chamber
but it’s good for you, too!
